Trustees
- Air Vice-Marshal Ray Lock CBE is Stoll’s Chair of Trustees. A retired Royal Air Force pilot and commander, Ray has a service history spanning 35 years. As well as flying fighter jets in the first Gulf War, he coordinated the establishment of the Air Field in Basra, Iraq for operational use in the second Gulf War. Ray was appointed head of the RAF station at Lyneham and was then in charge of the Joint Services Command and Staff College, the training establishment for senior officers across the tri-services. Ray is Chief Executive of the Forces in Mind Trust, a Trust established to influence and underpin policy making and service delivery in order to enable ex-Service personnel and their families to lead successful and sustainable civilian lives.
- David Rossington CB is the Vice Chair and Treasurer. A retired senior civil servant, David held a number of Board roles including that of Finance Director for two government departments, one of which was the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on National Records and Archives, and also a trustee of the Oxfordshire Community Foundation, of the Earth Trust (an Oxfordshire environmental charity), and of an arts charity in Oxford which works with homeless people, Arts at the Old Fire Station.
- Karl Craig is an Investment Manager at Canaccord Genuity, responsible for building and managing tailored investment portfolios for private clients and charities of the firm. Karl sits on the firm’s Investment Trust’s selection committee and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment. Following his degree at Exeter University, Karl embarked on a five-year Short Service Commission as an Officer in the British Army serving around the world. Upon leaving the Army, Karl went on to pursue a career in wealth management with Barclays Private Bank where he provided investment advice for private clients, family offices and trusts. Karl sits on Stoll’s Finance & HR committee. In addition, Karl is also a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers and sits on their membership committee.
- Uta Hope MA MInstF: Uta is an experienced fundraiser with a strong affinity for Service charities. Having started her career with The Royal British Legion, she has since worked for the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre, an initiative led by the Duke of Westminster, and Combat Stress, the Veterans’ Mental Health Charity. She is currently Senior Consultant at Global Philanthropic, an international fundraising advisory firm. Uta is a member of the Fundraising Committee.
- Simon Philips joined the Board of Trustees in 2014 and served as Chair of the Fundraising & Communications committee until 2020. Currently running his own marketing & communications consultancy, he spent the first part of his career with The Economist, followed by senior roles at UBS Investment Bank and the Grosvenor property group. In addition to his role at Stoll he has served as a director of a not-for-profit educational business and a director of a management training company.
- Richard Freeman became Stoll’s Chair of Fundraising since January 2021. A retired Army officer with 16 years of service from 1972 with tours of duty in the Falkland Islands, BAOR (West Germany) and the UK. Richard retired as a Major and immediately turned to a new career in Financial Services, based initially in Winchester. The next 30 years culminated in building a retail distribution business from start up to acquisition by Old Mutual Wealth in 2014 and retirement in mid 2018. Richard is Chair of the Development Board for Dallaglio RugbyWorks charity, helping excluded young adults back into main stream education or full employment and a board member of TISA.
- Paul Brookes BSc BArch RIBA ACIArb: An architect and expert witness who has now retired from running his own award-winning practice for over thirty-five years, directing the activities of several teams on multi-million pound residential projects. Specialist in housing development in conservation areas, often involving listed buildings. Skilled in optimising design projects to achieve maximum commercial and operational efficiency. Experienced in social, affordable and shared ownership residential design for several well-known housing associations and now a Trustee at Stoll working on the Development Committee, as well as a Board Member at Sussex Housing & Care.
- Roger Shrimplin MA(Cantab) DipArch RIBA FRTPI FCIArb MCIL: Roger has been Partner and Principal of C W & R C Shrimplin (Chartered Architects and Chartered Town Planners) since 1975. He is an occasional lecturer or external examiner in professional practice at the University of Cambridge, the Architectural Association, University College London and elsewhere. He has been a member of Council of ARCUK 1985-88 and 1994-97 and of the RIBA in 1995-2001, 2004-10 and 2013-. He has also been a member of the Board of the RIBA and of various committees of the RIBA, ARCUK, ACE and ARB (Honorary Secretary RIBA 1999-2001, 2007-09 and 2014-, Honorary Treasurer 2009-10). He was a Trustee of the London Stained Glass Repository during 1996-2012 and a Director of Glaziers Hall Ltd during 2002-08. Roger is Chair of the Development Committee.
- Katherine Russell has over 37 years experience of working in the housing sector and has previously worked at housing organisations including the Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust, the Metropolitan Housing Trust, Luton Borough Council and Westminster City Council. She was also involved in setting up the Housing Diversity Network’s Board Mentoring Scheme. As Director of People and Performance at the Aylesbury Housing Trust, Katherine worked on Resident and Stakeholder engagement, community development, HR, organisational change and corporate communications. Katherine is Chair of the Housing and Services Committee.
- David Arthur FRICS has extensive commercial and residential property experience including 27 yrs working for Segro, latterly as Head of Group Performance Management. David has recently retired after 8 yrs as Director of Estates and Planning at Blind Veterans where he was responsible for a wide range of operational and investment properties. He is currently a trustee of a local charity running a small portfolio of flats and houses. David is a member of the Housing and Services Committee.
- Mark Sweeny is a governance and strategy consultant specialising in the social housing sector. He also has a strong background in regulation, corporate performance management and information systems. He started work in social housing in 1982 and has never wandered far from the sector, having been a non-executive director of various organisations since 1994. His only departure comes as a result of a ten year period working in ICT, mostly in project and programme management. He is currently also a non-executive director at Sapphire Independent Housing, a small registered provider in North-West London and a governor at Barnet and Southgate College, a further education provider in North London. Mark is a member of the Finance and Human Resources Committee.
- Dr Ian Fyfe-Green BSc CertIoD PGDip MSc DBA CMgr FCMI FInstLM FRAeS MIoD. Ian joined the Royal Navy in 1992 as a Direct Entry Seaman Officer, serving in HMS BRAZEN and GLASGOW before transferring to the Fleet Air Arm as an Air Traffic Control Officer. A Fighter Controller in HMS ARK ROYAL and SATCO in HMS ILLUSTRIOUS, Ian has also controlled at several RAF and Naval Air Stations, the last of which in sub-Unit Command. Ian served overseas in Rome as part of the EU response to the migration crisis and latterly in a Defence Engagement role in SE Asia. His final military appointment was as the Head of Airspace Policy & Strategy for the MoD, within the Civil Aviation Authority at Gatwick. Leaving the RN in 2021, Ian now works for Thales as their UK Head of Compliance within safety engineering and is also a Trustee for a Naval benevolence charity. Ian is a member of the Audit & Risk Committee.
- Cathy Egan, our Tenant Trustee, is a native of Scotland who began her career by serving in the Royal Air Force (RAF) for three years, as a dental surgery assistant at various RAF bases. Her life took a new direction as she embraced the role of an Army wife, leading her to travel across the UK, Northern Ireland, and Germany. Cathy transitioned into social work, initially supporting people with learning and physical disabilities. Her passion and empathy led her to become a social worker working various projects including helping young people with mental health conditions find employment and rebuild their lives. She is also an avid traveller who has explored the world independently, broadening her horizons and enriching her life experiences. Cathy is a member of the Development Committee.
